Rhinoplasty Enhances Beauty and Improves Breathing

Nasal Plastic Surgery (Rhinoplasty), or “nose job”, is a procedure that involves altering the cartilage and bony framework of your nose to improve how it looks. Often, patients will seek out this type of procedure because their nose looks unbalanced with the rest. The nose might be too big (or too small), crooked or contain an unwanted bump or deformity. An attractive nose is generally one that draws the attention of the viewer to their eyes rather than the nose rhinoplasty cost.

Rhinoplasty surgery is an art as well as a science. The artistic component involves the surgeon listening and understanding the patient’s desire for improvement. He then combines this with his own aesthetic standards in order to produce the best outcome. The goal of rhinoplasty surgery is to create a balanced, beautiful nose, which is also natural looking. The science of nose surgery involves creating a functional and durable organ that will maintain its structural integrity over time.

Computer imaging is an important tool that we use at our San Diego clinic to increase patient understanding, and to establish realistic goals. Our rhinoplasty patient’s can see what they could look like following surgery. They are generally more satisfied with the outcome. Patients can sometimes benefit from adjunctive treatments such as chin implants, neck liposuction or cervical (neck), to further enhance profile.

If you are planning a rhinoplasty procedure, it’s important to factor in any functional surgeries that may be required to clear blocked breathing channels. This may be a deviated nose septum, hypertrophy or the nasal turbinates. Or, it could be a movement inward of the nasal sidewalls during respiration. The insurance company may cover this portion of the surgery if it is necessary.

The Surgery

In many cases, the rhinoplasty may be performed without an external incision. Open Rhinoplasty can be performed if you need to sculpt the tip of your nose or reconstruct the middle third. The open approach is performed by making a tiny incision at the base of the nostril. This allows the surgeon to view the nasal structures directly. This open incision for rhinoplasty heals normally with an invisible scar, which is not of concern to patients. Dr. Amir’s experience as a facial plastic surgeon allows him to choose between an “open”, “endonasal”, or “separate” approach.

The procedure can last from one to two hours and is typically performed in an outpatient setting at our fully certified and staffed facility. Most of our San Diego, CA rhinoplasty patient will return home that same afternoon. However, those who travel long distances may choose to stay the night in a nearby Radisson. Anesthesia for facial cosmetic surgery is typically a combination of general anesthesia and IV sedation. It depends on the patient’s choice and the duration of the procedure.

On waking up after surgery, your nose is covered by an external splint. It is used to protect and stabilize the nasal bones. The splint must be worn for a full week. The pain level is usually quite low, but patients still receive pain medication as well as antibiotics and medications to reduce swelling. In general, breathing is difficult the first day. But the next morning you will return to the San Diego office for an appointment. A small amount of gauze will then be removed from each nostril. You will then be able able to breath comfortably.

The majority of patients choose to take one week off from work or school around the date of surgery. Even though you can expect some swelling after surgery and even some bruising, your nose should be looking great within a week. While post-operative edema or swelling will mostly disappear within the first 30 days, subtle changes may persist for 3 months to 1 year.
